8種類の食用豆類に含まれるポリフェノールと抗酸化活性 OAK
小嶋, 道之; 森田, 武志; 齋藤, 優介; 西, 繁典; Kojima, Michiyuki; Morita, Takeshi; Saito, Yusuke; Nishi, Shigenori.
The antioxidative activities...

A 27 kyr terrestrial biomarker record in the southern Indian Ocean ArchiMer
Sicre, Marie-alexandrine; Labeyrie, Laurent; Ezat, Ullah; Mazaud, Alain; Turon, Jean-louis.
Terrestrial inputs were reconstructed using high molecular weight n-alkane concentrations recorded in the sub-Antarctic Indian Ocean core MD94-103 (45 degrees 35'S, 86 degrees 31'E, 3560 m) to examine regional changes in the atmospheric circulation over the last 27 kyr. This record was compared to the dust content of EPICA-Dome C ice and continental data from South Africa ( e. g., pollen sequences and isotope records in speleothems) to get a comprehensive understanding of atmospheric links between low and midlatitudes of the Indian Ocean. Terrestrial n-alkanes indicate higher glacial than Holocene inputs and marked glacial oscillations. Minimum values during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) are consistent with colder and drier climate and presumably caused...

A Battle of Taste and Environmental Convictions for Ecolabeled Seafood: A Contingent Ranking Experiment AgEcon
Johnston, Robert J.; Roheim, Cathy A..
Consumers face pressure from environmental groups to modify their seafood purchase decisions based on concerns about fisheries' production practices. Existing research provides little information indicating whether seafood consumers are willing to change purchasing behavior based on a product's environmental attributes, to the exclusion of other attributes. We describe a contingent ranking experiment addressing preferences for fresh seafood, allowing for choices among different species, some displaying an ecolabel. Results suggest consumers consider overfishing sufficiently important to contemplate changing the species of fish they buy; however, they are unwilling to choose a less-favored species based solely on the presence of an ecolabel.

A Bayesian Approach to the Estimation of Environmental Kuznets Curves for CO2 Emissions AgEcon
Mazzanti, Massimiliano; Musolesi, Antonio; Zoboli, Roberto.
This paper investigates the EKC curves for CO2 emissions in a panel of 109 countries during the period 1959-2001. The length of the series makes the application of a heterogeneous estimator suitable from an econometric point of view. The results, based on the hierarchical Bayes estimator, show that different EKC dynamics are associated with the different sub samples of countries considered. On average, more industrialized countries show an EKC evidence in quadratic specifications, which are nevertheless probably evolving into an N shape, emerging from cubic specifications. Less developed countries consistently show that CO2 emissions still rise positively with income, though some signals of an EKC path arise.

A Bioeconomic Analysis of Protected Area use in Fisheries Management AgEcon
Greenville, Jared W.; MacAulay, T. Gordon.
The use of protected areas as a fishery management tool has been suggested as a hedge against management failures and variation in harvests. A stochastic bioeconomic model of a two-species fishery will be used to test the performance of protected areas as a management tool in a fishery with heterogenous environments. Protected areas are analysed under density-dependent and sink-source dispersal relationships between environments within the fishery. Differing levels of management control over fishery resource extraction are analysed. The model is applied to Manning Bioregion in NSW. The focus of the study is placed on the biological and institutional characteristics that yield benefits to the fishery.

A Brief Agrarian History of the Cottonwood River Watershed in Southwestern Minnesota AgEcon
Petrolia, Daniel R..
The Cottonwood River Watershed is located in southwestern Minnesota, draining 1,310 square miles of land within the Minnesota River Basin. The watershed is comprised of parts of Brown, Cottonwood, Lyon, Murray, and Redwood Counties. This essay gives a brief account of the initial European settlement of the area and the establishment of the current political boundaries. It then focuses on the major developments in agricultural production during the past 150 years, touching on the changes in landscape and wildlife due to drainage and restructuring of water bodies and the clearing of forest land.

A case study of changes in economic performance of an irrigated dairy farm in northern Victoria AgEcon
Ho, Christie K.M.; Malcolm, Bill; Armstrong, Dan P.; Doyle, Peter T..
Average total factor productivity measures for the dairy industry provide an insight into how the industry is performing as a whole, but reveal little about what may be happening on individual farms. A case study of an irrigated dairy farm in northern Victoria, over a 37-year period, found that total milk production and some measures of partial productivity increased substantially. The economic performance of this case study farm over the 37-year period is described and analysed. From records of income and expenses, operating profit, returns to capital, labour and management and total productivity measures were calculated. Between 1980 and 2000, the business achieved productivity gains at higher than the rate estimated for the whole industry. This...

A century of research on the classical locality of Tegelen (province of Limburg, The Netherlands) Naturalis
Hoek Ostende, L.W. van den; Vos, J. de.
In 1904 Eugène Dubois published the first report on fossil mammals from the vicinity of Tegelen. After a century of research the clay-pits from the area are known as a classical locality for Villafranchian mammals. Antje Schreuder's work was particularly important for making the fossils from Tegelen known. Her papers, however, also indicate some problems. The large mammal fossils were gathered by clay-workers in the local ceramic industry, and the fragmentary nature of the fossils is partly caused by injudicious handling while extracting the bones from the clay. Because the Tegelen fossils are chance finds rather than the results of careful excavations, their exact provenance is not established. The only exception is the collection of micromammals, which...

A CGE Analysis of the Harbinson Proposal: Outcomes for the EU25 AgEcon
Philippidis, George; Hubbard, Lionel J.; Renwick, Alan W..
In this study, we employ the Harbinson proposal and July Framework to compare a ‘likely’ Doha scenario with an ‘inclusive’ baseline. The key aim is to assess the impacts across EU member states. More specifically, we (i) employ the latest version 6 of the GTAP database, (ii) explicitly model CAP mechanisms (e.g., quotas, decoupled payments, set-aside, CAP budget etc.) to more accurately assess the asymmetric trade led welfare effects on selected EU member states, and (iii) introduce binding overhangs into domestic support, export subsidies and more importantly market access commitments. Whilst the EU regions benefit from the multilateral reform proposals, the gains are weakened considerably by the tariff binding overhangs, where the EU25 only gain ten per...

A Choice-Based Conjoint Experiment with Genetically Engineered Cotton in the Mississippi Delta AgEcon
Banerjee, Swagata (Ban); Martin, Steven W.; Hudson, Darren.
Producers' preferences for cottonseed are examined using a willingness-to-pay (WTP) approach via mail surveys. Results indicate a positive WTP for yield, technology and fiber quality, and it increases with the level of technology and quality, respectively. WTP varies directly with farm size and inversely with farm labor.

A Comparative Analysis of Production and Marketing of Bt Cotton and Hybrid Cotton in Saurashtra Region of Gujarat State AgEcon
Visawadia, H.R.; Fadadu, A.M.; Tarpara, V.D..
The study has revealed that the total cost per hectare is higher in Bt cotton than hybrid cotton. The cost of seeds has been found higher in Bt cotton, whereas hybrid cotton growers incur more cost on insecticides/ pesticides. This shows the effectiveness of the new technology (Bt cotton) for insect resistance. The average total cost of production as well as the bulk line cost have been found lower in Bt cotton. This depicts a reduction in the unit cost of Bt cotton, which is the distinct advantage of the new technology. A higher yield of 29 per cent has been obtained by the Bt cotton farmers over the hybrid cotton growers. The study has identified the constraints in production, and marketing of Bt cotton in the area. Bt cotton has been found a superior...
